Assistant Director – Business Services


HMP Thameside


Salary: £45,000 + 15% London Weighting (Permanent, Full-time, 40 Hrs)


Here at Serco, we are looking for an experienced Assistant Director (AD) to join our team at HMP Thameside. The Assistant Director is a key role responsible for the delivery of functional elements of the Contract, in line with Service Specifications and Prison Service Instructions. The Assistant Director is to play a strategic and operational part in the delivery of the Contract, in line with Service Specifications and Prison Service Instructions and will be responsible for the Business Development area within the contract.


Additionally the AD has overall responsibility for the Catering Department, oversight of the Stores function, Procurement, Prisoner Finance, Prison Shop, IT, WFM, Training, Contract Compliance, Internal Audit, Information Assurance, Operational Excellence, Use of Force, Litigation, Complaints, correspondence and EPF.


As Assistant Director you will responsible for the Strategic planning and Operational/Functional management of staff in delivering against the targets set out in the Annual Custodial Service Delivery Plan for the prison.  You may occasionally be required to carry out additional duties as designated by the contract Director, for example supporting   incidents in accordance with Incident Management protocols.



Key accountabilities include:

  • Take overall functional responsibility for the departments listed; namely Catering, Business Services, Central Detail, Discipline, Training, Stores, Prison Shop, Prisoner Finance, Procurement, IT, Contract Compliance, Information Assurance and Internal Audit.
  • Concisely articulates business issues, areas of improvement and formulate a variety of solutions / innovations.  Work with key stakeholders to translate findings into a practical action plan.
  • Generate innovative ideas that are strategically sound, progressive, and challenge the status quo.
  • Work with all employees to foster an entrepreneurial culture which supports ideas and new initiatives to enhance our level of service delivery and cost efficiency.
  • Acknowledge and reinforce high quality work and outstanding performance efforts; provide consistent recognition and encouragement to the team.
  • Develop and maintain up to date Directors Rules which are to clearly detail all procedures operating within the facility regarding your functional area.
  • Responsible for delivering continuous improvement through quality initiatives such as ‘Custodial Blueprint’ and LEAN practices.
  • Responsible for your functional delivery of Service Delivery Requirements specified through negotiation with the Ministry of Justice in the Annual Custodial Service Delivery Plan (ACSDP).

What you will need to do the role:


In order to carry out this role successfully, you must have a minimum of 2 years relevant custodial experience. It is also essential that you have previous Line Management or People Management experience. You will also have:


  • Up to date knowledge of all mandatory custodial training requirements.
  • Good level of computer skills including knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook applications.
  • Demonstrated sound leadership qualities including motivation and ability to lead by example.
  • Alignment with Serco's Governing Principles and commitment to the highest standards of service delivery.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the operational process’ and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have a good understanding of conflict resolution & de-escalation and also management of risk and conflict.
