Senior Engineer

HMP Thameside, SE28

Full Time, Permanent – 40 hours per week

£37,832 per annum (inc LWA) + Corporate Company Benefits

A Local category B establishment that can currently hold 900 convicted and remand male prisoners.


Here at Serco, we are looking for a qualified Senior Engineer to take on overall responsibility for the day-to-day organisation of work and the allocation of tasks, the tracking of work progress and stock management.


You will ensure that planned and reactive maintenance plans meet the needs of both the operational demands of the establishment as well as the contractual requirements set by the customer.


What you’ll need to do the role 


First and foremost, you will have worked in a Custodial environment and you will have relevant management experience of providing first line leadership, alongside the desirability as an Approved Person for permitted work and understanding of how to control contractors.


Educated to GSCE level including Maths and English and holding a qualification as either an Approved Electrician (JIB) with 17th edition or with HVAC qualifications including COCN1, ICPN1 TCP1, CDGA1, CIGA1, BMP1.


Experience in a variety of HVAC and electrical systems and fault finding and diagnosis of common faults and rectifying them.


The is an extremely busy demanding role and will include further accountabilities detailed below:


  • Assist in the development of maintenance plans that ensure that the establishment is safe and compliant both with statutory requirements and with the requirements of the contract.
  • Plan and programme maintenance activities according to the SFG20 programme held in the CAFM system and prioritising work in a hierarchy of safety, compliance, and contractual requirements.
  • Allocate work according to the demands of the maintenance plan to trades staff on a daily basis.
  • Track, monitor and manage the progress of work and the productivity of staff to delivering the daily work plan.
  • Provide appropriate challenge and assurance to ensure that work is delivered to the highest standards.
  • Ensure that activities are risk assessed and managed in accordance with such findings.
  • Ensure that tools and equipment are regularly inspected and are used in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Oversee the work of contractors and ensure that they are behaving in a manner consistent with the risk assessments and method statements and that their work quality is regularly assessed and audited.
  • Act as an Approved Person for one or more of HV/LV electrical work (where qualified), pressure systems, confined spaces, work at height, and hot works.
  • Maintain and seek to improve the safety culture and health/wellbeing within the team.
  • Organise the operation in a highly effective manner, ensuring that planned and reactive maintenance is delivered in accordance with contractual demands.
  • Foster a culture within the team that reflects Serco’s core values of Trust, Care, Pride and Innovation.
  • Administer leave, sickness absence, expenses, and overtime in line with Serco policy.
  • Deputise for the Facilities Manager in his/her absence in dealing with staff management and development.
  • Monitor spend and financial commitments in line with policy and guidance, produce spend data as and where required.
  • Purchase spares and equipment required for the delivery of maintenance in the Contract in line with procurement practice and procedures.
  • Monitor and authorise overtime in line with J&I overtime policy.


Additional Requirements


  • To be a team member of the Facilities “Out of hours” call out roster.
  • Deputise for the FM Manager at meetings and other absences.
