Operational Support Officer - HMP Thameside

London, SE28 0FJ

Permanent, Full Time, 40 Hours per week

£20,388 including LWA


At HMP Thameside we provide a safe, decent, secure and respectful environment that encapsulates a wide range of constructive activities. The regime both combines and embraces work, education, vocational training, accredited offending behaviour programmes, as well as prisoner health and appropriate interventions where individual need is identified. HMP Thameside is a Local category B establishment that can currently hold 1,232 convicted and remand male prisoners.


The role:

Our OSO’s play an important part in the smooth-running of the establishment which, supporting Prison Custody Officers, Operational Line as well as members of the public and visitors.


Daily duties involve:

  • Escorting contractors, visitors, prisoners and vehicles within the establishment
  • Searching prisoner’s property
  • Stores duties
  • Administrative/Clerical work utilising IT Systems
  • Driving/navigating vehicles on Escort Duties
  • Searching of prisoners
  • Security
  • Self-harm prevention
  • Incident Reporting


What we’re looking for:

You don’t have to have previous experience in a custodial environment – we’re looking for candidates will have strong communication and interpersonal skills and should be able to demonstrate a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. Being a team-player is key along side the ability to multi-task and have a flexible approach. You will also be IT literate and proficient in the use key MS Office applications.


Hours & Shifts:

The service that we provide to our prisoners is available every day of the year across a 24 hour period, meaning you will have to cover various shift patterns; including days, evenings, weekends, nights and bank holidays with an average of 40 hours per week.



Once you have passed the selection and vetting process, you will attend an 5 day Initial Training Course (ITC) at the establishment you have been recruited for, and you will be required to have 100% attendance.  The ITC will provide you high quality training where you will undergo various security awareness training as well as a one day personal protection course.


Specific Requirements:

This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and all offers of employment are subject to security clearance checks and approval by the Home Office.
