Tutor (Horticulture)

HMP Lowdham Grange, Nottinghamshire

Full-Time/ Permanent

Up to £26,500 per annum + Benefits


Here at Serco we’re looking for a Tutor to join us at HMP Lowdham Grange in Nottinghamshire. You will be responsible for developing, administering and delivering all aspects of your specialist subject at the varying levels and in line with the core curriculum and award body specification. 


The post holder will assist the Education Managers in the delivery of an education provision which increases employability, reduces the likelihood of reoffending and prepares prisoners for a successful return to the community. You will actively promote all education activities, create a tailored programme for each individual learner and maintain accurate records for all aspects of each programme including learner attendance, progression routes and levels of achievement.


What you’ll need to do the role

First and foremost, you will need to hold a minimum of a Level 3 Award in Education & Training as well a Level 3 in Horticulture. A Level 4 Award in Education & Training and an Assessor Award would be extremely desirable but not essential. You’ll need to have worked in a similar role previously or have experience within the custodial environment, be someone that works well under pressure and can work to tight deadlines.


The successful applicant will be approachable, flexible, reliable, have previous experience working in a demanding role and have the confidence to work our prisoners within the residential areas of the establishment. We are looking for someone that can communicate at all levels, build strong working relationships and be a successful part of an ever-growing team.


As part of this you’ll:

  • Establishing and maintaining positive and professional relationships with learners. Also develop links and relationships with appropriate partnerships and other disciplines within the programmes area for your contract.
  • Work to support leaners for 3 hours in duration AM and PM as required by the Learning and Skills Department. Regularly evaluate own work and encourage learners to evaluate constructively the sessions they attend, in order to contribute to the continuous development of the service.
  • Managing resources within budget; carefully managing the use of equipment and resources actively encouraging learners to value them.
  • Working in accordance with all statutory, Home Office, company and department requirements.  This will include reporting security and /or intelligence information immediately to the Head of Learning Skills and making referrals to the designated person/professional service providers.
  • As required, to carry out rub down searching of prisoners to support the security aspects of the Tutor position.
