Assistant Director - Security and Operations

HMP Kilmarnock

Permanent, Full-time, 40 Hrs

£40,000 - £45,000 per annum + Excellent Corporate Benefits Package


Here at Serco, we are looking for an experienced Assistant Director to join our team at HMP Kilmarnock. The Assistant Director is a key role responsible for the delivery of functional elements of the Contract, in line with Service Specifications and Prison Service Instructions. The role will be responsible for a functional area if Security & Operations, is responsible for managing core custodial operations designed to provide safe and secure conditions in which prisoners are treated with decency and respect.  This includes the management of the Visits and Reception functions.

You will manage the security and operational functions in accordance with Prison Rules, Local Operating Procedures and Schedule C & D of the Contract. S/he will also be required to act as Duty Director as part of a rota system.

As Assistant Director you will responsible for the strategic planning of an area and management of resources in delivering against the objectives set out in the Contract. You will also be required to carry out duties of the Duty Senior Manger assuming operational responsibility for managing the prison regime.  This will include adjudications and managing incidents in accordance with Incident Management protocols.


Key accountabilities include:

  • Concisely articulates business issues, areas of improvement and formulate a variety of solutions / innovations.  Work with key stakeholders to translate findings into a practical action plan.
  • Contribute to the Strategic Planning process, ensuring that appropriate objectives and targets are set and achieved across the security and operations functions.
  • Work with all employees to foster an entrepreneurial culture which supports ideas and new initiatives to enhance our level of service delivery and cost efficiency.
  • Acknowledge and reinforce high quality work and outstanding performance efforts; provide consistent recognition and encouragement to the team.
  • Maintain effective liaison with criminal justice partners in support of co-operative efforts to disrupt criminal activities in HMP Kilmarnock and the wider community.
  • Responsible for delivering continuous improvement through quality initiatives such as ‘Custodial Blueprint’ and LEAN practices.
  • Responsible for your functional delivery of Service Delivery Requirements specified through negotiation with the Ministry of Justice in the Annual Custodial Service Delivery Plan (ACSDP).

What you will need to do the role:


In order to carry out this role successfully, you must Significant management experience in a Security and Operations role in a secure custodial setting. You will also have:


  • Up to date knowledge of all mandatory custodial training requirements.
  • Good level of computer skills including knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook applications.
  • Demonstrated sound leadership qualities including motivation and ability to lead by example.
  • Alignment with Serco's Governing Principles and commitment to the highest standards of service delivery.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the operational process’ and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have a good understanding of conflict resolution & de-escalation and also management of risk and conflict.
