HMP Thameside is a local Category B resettlement prison in the Thamesmead area of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, South-East London.  Thameside is London’s only private prison and can currently hold 1232 convicted and remand male prisoners.  A relatively new-build prison, completed in March 2012, Serco has managed the facility since opening.  We provide a safe, decent, secure and respectful environment.

 

We are looking for a Senior Engineer to take overall responsibility for the day-to-day organisation of planned maintenance work (statutory and contractual), reactive repairs and local projects.  Working alongside an existing Senior Engineer, the successful candidate will be responsible for first line management of a team of 21 Engineers and Staff, with a variety of skills.  You will be required to report to and deputise for the on-site Facilities Manager and manage relationships with operational colleagues at all levels.

 

As well as ensuring that the team’s training is up to date, site health & safety procedures are followed and that Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work are adhered to, the successful candidate will be expected to manage Contractors, ensure remedial work tasks are completed on time following maintenance, and react to whatever new challenge the day brings.

 

What you’ll need to do the role 

 

First and foremost, you will have relevant management experience of providing first line leadership.  Ideally you will hold an Engineering qualification or experience, knowledge of relevant systems within a similar environment and be fully conversant with statutory requirements.

 

This is an extremely busy demanding role and will include further accountabilities detailed below:

 

  • Assist in the development of maintenance plans that ensure that the establishment is safe and compliant.
  • Plan and programme maintenance activities according to the programme held in the CAFM system and prioritise work in a hierarchy of safety, compliance, and contractual needs.
  • Allocate work according to staff on a daily basis.
  • Track, monitor and manage the progress of work and the productivity of staff.
  • Provide appropriate challenge and assurance to ensure that work is delivered to the highest standards and within timescales.
  • Ensure that activities are risk assessed and managed in accordance with such findings.
  • Ensure that tools and equipment are regularly inspected and are used in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Oversee the work of contractors and ensure that they are behaving in a manner consistent with the risk assessments and method statements and that their work quality is regularly assessed and audited.
  • Act as an Approved Person for one or more of HV/LV electrical work (where qualified), pressure systems, confined spaces, work at height, and hot works.
  • Maintain and seek to improve the safety culture and health/wellbeing within the team.
  • Organise the operation in a highly effective manner, ensuring that planned and reactive maintenance is delivered.
  • Foster a culture within the team that reflects Serco’s core values of Trust, Care, Pride and Innovation.
  • Administer leave, sickness absence, expenses, and overtime in line with Serco policy.
  • Deputise for the Facilities Manager in their absence in dealing with staff management and development.
  • Monitor spend and financial commitments in line with policy and guidance, produce spend data as and where required.
  • Purchase spares and equipment required for the delivery of maintenance in line with procurement practice and procedures.
  • Monitor and authorise overtime in line with J&I overtime policy.

 

Additional Requirements

 

  • To be a team member of the Facilities “Out of hours” call out roster.
  • Deputise for the FM Manager at meetings and other absences.
