Technician - Structured Cabling Network - Fiber & Copper

The Job Opportunity

The purpose of the role is to carryout preventative, corrective and breakdown maintenance on fibre optics and copper cabling networks equipment and systems, individually or as part of a technical team, within a designated area whilst ensuring minimal disruption to operations.

 

This role is a subject to contract award and further details will be disclosed at a later stage.

Key accountabilities;

  • Ability to conform to all general and specific technical safety requirements at all times to ensure the health, safety & welfare of self and others at work.
  • Any other work as assigned by the supervisor / duty engineer to achieve the purpose.
  • Basic knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS).
  • Able to read interpret and describe the functionality of fibre optic / copper cabling drawings (circuit & wiring diagrams / schematic & layout drawings).
  • Able to correctly setup and use test equipment and interpret the test results on integrated fibre optic and copper cabling systems to include;
    • Hand held microscopes
    • Fibre-scope meters
    • Optical light power meters (OLTS)
    • Optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR)
    • Fusion Splicing equipment
  • Knowledge in the use & interpretation of Local and International Electrical Standards and Regulations.
  • Ability to raise & complete PMS fault report sheets, daily utilization reports and CMMS work orders.
  • Ability to adopt a logical or methodical approach to troubleshooting & fault finding on LV systems.
  • Acts a role model for tradesman and helpers and leads the team by example with consistent attention to detail and quality by demonstrating a "get it right first time every time" attitude to the job.

  • Patch panels
  • SM/MM fibre optic splicing enclosures
  • Cat6 Cabling
  • Transceivers and converters
  • Fibre optic test equipment’ and Tools

 

Asset Maintenance Experience (Hands-on)  

For listed Assets, in the capacity as a lead person;

  • Periodic Preventive Maintenance
  • Breakdown Trouble Shooting
  • Inspections
  • Condition Assessment
  • Condition Based Maintenance
  • Corrective Maintenance
  • Configuration and Modifications

 

Tasks’ Experience (Hands-on)   

Tasks such as, but not limited to;

  • Surveillance - Testing for Detection of fibre loss increase, fibre deterioration, water penetration
  • Testing – Measurement of fibre fault location, fibre strain distribution, water ingress location
  • Control - Fibre identification, Fibre transfer system
  • Cable repair or Removal
  • Testing with an OTDR for maintenance inspection
  • Microscopic inspection of connectors and mating adapters

Specific requirements

  • Must have High School Certificate.
  • Must have Industrial Training Institute Diploma (3-year duration) in structured cabling installation and maintenance or equivalent (post high school).
  • IOSH Working Safely Certificate or equivalent.
  • Holding of valid UAE driving license is desirable                                         
  • Must have minimum six (6) years' experience within a structured cabling installation and / or maintenance environment.
  • Should be fluent in written and spoken English and have ability to communicate with staff, stakeholders and customers in oral and written English.
  • Should have working knowledge in Ms Office (Word / Excel / PowerPoint, Outlook) etc.
  • Ability to perform safely and correctly the following on complex structured cabling equipment and systems;• Isolations and LOTO.
    • Planned preventative maintenance (PM) routines
    • Corrective maintenance (CM)
    • Breakdown maintenance (BD)

      to include;

  • Cable Splicing
  • Link loss budgets
  • Fibre Optic Cabling
  • Twisted pair cabling
  • Patch panels
  • Network Switches
  • Category 5e and 6
  • Modular connections
  • Splicing Enclosures
