A quick re-cap: Job application tips from our session at DSEI

The initial recruitment process includes application, online tests, telephone interview and assessment (either face to face or virtual). If successful you'll be required to go through strict security and vetting checks, which will allow you to work in this secure environment. The checks are conducted via the Home Office and can up to six weeks to complete.

  1. Think of your CV as a highlight reel – focus on your strengths, even if you lack experience.
  2. Keep it simple and clear – 1–2 pages, easy-to-read font, bullet points, and reverse chronological order.
  3. Include the essentials – contact details, personal summary, work experience, education, qualifications, and skills.
  4. Showcase more than jobs – uni projects, volunteering, and quantifiable outcomes all count.
  5. Use action verbs – e.g. Led, Created, Managed to show impact.
  6. Tailor every CV – match keywords from the job advert to beat automated screening systems.
  7. Perfect your personal summary – it’s your elevator pitch, make it engaging and strength-focused.
  8. Proofread, then proofread again – use another person or an online checker to catch mistakes.

  1. Only include one if it adds value – avoid repeating your CV.
  2. Keep it relevant and concise – max 1 page, focused on why you’re a great fit.
  3. Add something new – show personality and motivation for the role.
  4. Finish strong – express interest and end with a call to action.
  5. Use AI carefully – as a drafting tool only. Always personalise, fact-check, and make it sound like you.

  1. Do your homework – research the company, role, website, socials, and news. Prepare questions to ask.
  2. Practice, practice, practice – rehearse common questions, record yourself, and try mock interviews.
  3. Use the STAR method – Situation, Task, Action, Result – for clear, confident storytelling.
  4. Show personality and passion – authenticity, enthusiasm, and real-life examples win.
  5. Don’t just repeat your CV – expand with stories that demonstrate your skills.
