Jack’s Story: Gaining Hands-on
Experience and Helping to
Improve the Rail Industry

Serco Rail Technical Services apprentice Jack Mahaffey shares how hands-on learning and practical experience are helping him build a career in rail engineering.

One of 642 apprentices at Serco UK, Jack joined Serco Rail Technical Services (RTS) after deciding to pursue a career in engineering.

“Before joining Serco Rail Technical Services, I was completing a Level 2 Plumbing course. While studying, I realised I wanted to pursue a career in engineering instead, as I was more interested in problem solving, technical work and practical learning. That led me to apply for the apprenticeship role with Serco RTS," Jack says.
“I was attracted to the apprenticeship because it offered the opportunity to gain real engineering experience while continuing to learn and develop professionally. The chance to work in a hands-on environment, alongside experienced engineers and within the rail industry, really stood out to me.”
He adds: “One of the biggest challenges has been developing the technical knowledge needed for the role. I’ve found that gaining hands-on experience and learning directly from practical tasks has really helped me build my understanding and confidence over time."

“Since starting my apprenticeship," Jack says, "I’ve become much more confident both professionally and personally. Working within a corporate environment has helped me mature, improve my communication skills and become more comfortable taking on responsibility.

“Even as an apprentice, being able to support engineering activities and learn while contributing to the team is rewarding.”
