As a Senior Maritime Warfare Instructor, you’ll draw on your navigation, warfare and operational experience to train and mentor the next generation of Royal Australian Navy Surface Warfare Officers.
Based at HMAS Watson in Sydney, you’ll combine classroom instruction and high-fidelity simulation to build the capability and confidence Junior Officers need at sea.

This role involes...
Delivering advanced maritime training
Provide specialist instruction in navigation, ship handling and tactical maritime warfare.
Developing future Officers-of-the-Watch
Mentor and assess Junior Officers, building the skills and judgement they need to perform Officer-of-the-Watch duties aboard major fleet units.
Helping shape Navy training
Bring your operational perspective to course reviews, training materials and the ongoing development of Navy training capability.
Keeping your operational knowledge sharp
Stay up to date with RAN navigation and warfare tactics, techniques and procedures, bringing current operational knowledge into the training you deliver.

What we’re looking for
You’ll bring recent operational experience from a Commonwealth Navy, along with a genuine interest in using your expertise to develop future Surface Warfare Officers.
You’ll ideally have:
New to an instructor role?
Instructional experience is welcomed but isn’t essential.
We’ll support you in obtaining the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
Considering a move to Australia?
We welcome applications from suitably qualified Commonwealth Navy candidates.
Sponsorship and relocation support are available for eligible international candidates.
You’ll ideally have:
- Operational experience: Principal Warfare Officer or Navigating Officer experience aboard a Frigate , Destroyer or Commonwealth equivalent.
- Relevant qualification: Principal Warfare Officer Course, Surface Combatant Navigation Course, or an equivalent Commonwealth qualification.
- Recent experience: Around 12 months operational experience as a Principal Warfare Officer or Navigating Officer.
- People skills: Strong communication and mentoring skills.
- Security clearance: Eligibility to obtain and maintain an NV1 Defence Security Clearance.
