As a Navigation Instructor, you’ll draw on your operational experience to help future Royal Australian Navy Surface Warfare Officers develop the navigation knowledge and professional standards their roles require.
Based at either HMAS Watson in Sydney or HMAS Stirling in WA, you’ll deliver and assess navigation training in the classroom, bridge simulator and at sea, while helping keep Navy courses current and consistent.

This role involes...
Teaching navigation skills
Deliver theoretical and practical training in the classroom, bridge simulator and at sea. This includes assessing participants capability throughout their training.
Mentoring Junior Warfare Officers
Pass on the operational knowledge you’ve built and the professional standards you’ve upheld during service.
Keeping courses current
Ensure training materials and assessments reflect Navy navigation tactics, techniques and procedures.
Contributing to course development
Work with Navy and Serco stakeholders on course development, reviews and ongoing improvements.

What we’re looking for
You’ll bring recent operational navigation experience from a Commonwealth Navy, and a genuine interest in using your expertise to develop future Surface Warfare Officers.
You’ll ideally have:
New to an instructor role?
Instructional experience is welcomed but isn’t essential.
We’ll support you in obtaining the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
Considering a move to Australia?
We welcome applications from suitably qualified Commonwealth Navy candidates.
You’ll ideally have:
- Operational experience: Experience as the Navigating Officer of a Royal Australian Navy Minor War Vessel or Commonwealth equivalent.
- Relevant qualification: Completion of the Intermediate Navigation course qualification or a national industry equivalent.
- Recent experience: At least 12 months as a Navigating Officer of a Minor War Vessel.
- People skills: Strong communication and mentoring skills.
- Security clearance: Eligibility to obtain and maintain an NV1 Defence Security Clearance.

Navigation Instructors are based at either HMAS Watson at Sydney’s South Head or HMAS Stirling on Garden Island in Western Australia.
Together, the two Schools of Navigation Warfare deliver core and advanced navigation training.
Serco has delivered maritime warfare and navigation training at HMAS Watson since 2012 and now supports navigation instruction across both locations.
