Serco Defence are recruiting for an Assistant Shift Leader to work as a key member of a dedicated operations and maintenance team. This is a permanent position based at RAF Fylingdales, North Yorkshire, offering employment in a unique engineering environment which may require occasional travel for training and operational support at other Serco sites.  
 
The position of Assistant Shift Leader is a shift working position primarily operation, managing and overseeing the SSPAR Radar facilities equipment, HV/LV electrical distribution system and Building Management System (BMS). This requires a thorough knowledge of HV/LV electrical systems, HVAC, mechanical systems, and distributed control systems, with electronics knowledge also advantageous. 

 

The Assistant Shift Leader also acts as the deputy to the Shift Team Leader and is required to be able to fulfil all their duties in their absence.


Main Accountabilities:

 

  • Operation and monitoring of all facilities plant within the Solid-State Phased Array Radar (SSPAR) building via the Facilities Monitoring System (FMS).
  • Acting as Authorised Person (Electrical) for high and low voltage systems. Managing planned maintenance activities and conducting required corrective maintenance during unforeseen events.
  • Organising and coordinating Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) maintenance activities on all items of plant and maintaining a computerised record of activities and plant history.
  • Maintain an up-to-date chronological log of all equipment rotations, events and occurrences relating to SSPAR facilities.
  • Assisting Electrical and Mechanical technicians with preventative and corrective maintenance. 
  • Supervision and management of engineering sub-contractors when required. 
  • Ensuring compliance with appropriate regulations and legislation including site-specific procedures.

 

What you’ll need to do the role:

 

We are looking for someone with a technical background who is engaging and dependable with a strong interest in the engineering industry. Successful applicants must be self-motivated to constantly learn and develop new skills whilst having a flexible attitude towards work and fully accustomed with safe systems of work.

 

Required Qualifications/Experience:

 

  • A minimum Level 3 engineering qualification and/or extensive experience with High Voltage (HV) and Low Voltage (LV) electrical and electronic systems.
  • Experience working within safe systems of work (SSOW) environments.


Desired Qualifications:

 

  • A HNC in a suitable engineering discipline such as Electrical, Electronics or Mechanical. 
  • Any additional electronic qualifications or working experience
  • Leadership experience 

 

The successful applicant will be required to train and qualify as an Authorised Person (AP) Electrical for High and Low voltages. Site familiarisation, technical training and on-the-job training will be provided at RAF Fylingdales and will require the employed individual to possess fundamental electrical systems knowledge. To qualify as an Authorised Person the candidate will have to pass an approved MOD training course and be successfully appointed by the site Senior Authorising Engineer. 
 
The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate a high level of written and spoken English.   
Due to the nature of our work, the successful candidate must be able to pass SC clearance, which includes a criminal records check. Additionally, as the role is related to UK Defence only UK nationals can be considered as directed by the MOD.
