What is Electronic Monitoring at Serco?

Electronic Monitoring uses advanced technology systems and specialist devices, often called ankle monitors or electronic tags, to help the justice system manage individuals safely in the community instead of in prison — with a deep commitment to dignity and respect for every person involved.

It works by:
  • Using devices worn on the ankle (and sometimes the wrist)
  • Tracking location and movement through advanced GPS and radio frequency (RF) technology
  • Enforcing court or probation conditions such as curfews, exclusion zones and movement restrictions
  • Supporting rehabilitation while protecting public safety
  • Reducing pressure on the prison system

Our Field Monitoring Officers (FMOs) travel in crews to install, maintain and remove these monitoring devices, working directly with individuals in their homes.

Why join Electronic Monitoring Services?

Make no mistake, this is a role where your contribution counts - helping to give people in prison structure within their lives, being a role model to encourage positive choices, and ensuring that they're supported during their rehabilitation journey.

When you're on duty you'll act as mentor and will assure the safety, security and decency of prisoners and perform a pivotal role within the prison and the community it serves.

Every visit, every conversation and every decision you make helps reduce reoffending, strengthen communities and support individuals during one of the most challenging moments of their lives.

Electronic monitoring is not just about technology — it’s about people.

You will:
  • Help individuals comply with court and probation requirements
  • Support safer communities
  • Contribute to a more effective and compassionate justice system
  • Play a real part in rehabilitation and positive change
