Vanessa's Story: Championing colleague voices and creating pathways for future leaders
Since joining Serco in 2016 as a Prison Custody Officer at HMP Thameside, Vanessa Allen has built a career focused on making a difference. What began as a frontline operational role has evolved into one centred on colleague engagement, leadership and ensuring the voices of frontline teams are heard across the business.
"I picked up the jail craft and realised I wasn't just doing a job; I was making a difference. That commitment to the service users and the impact I could have on my peers is what inspired me to progress and become a Custodial Manager in 2022."
Vanessa's career has since taken her in a new direction. Today, as Colleague Connexions Lead, she works to build relationships between Serco's frontline workforce across the UK and the Board of Directors, helping to create stronger connections across the business.
"My role now is about building genuine relationships between our frontline workforce across the UK and the Board of Directors. It has been an incredible experience so far! It allows for transparency and gives me a platform to confidently advocate for our staff. My mission is to ensure their voices are not just heard but amplified."

Working across both frontline operations and the corporate environment has given Vanessa a unique perspective on leadership and inclusion. She believes authenticity is one of the most important qualities anyone can bring to work.
"Having a vibrant personality in that environment isn't like the characters you might see on TV! It's about being your authentic self and letting that fuel you through the roughest days."

"As a Black woman in a male-dominant environment, I've never let it be a challenge. Instead, I've seen it as an opportunity. I fiercely believe in showing up, being true to yourself, and smashing any stereotypes in your way."

After 22 years of service, Jock took a short break before joining Serco in 2011. “I wanted to spend time with my family, take my daughter to school, and enjoy being home,” he says. “That’s one of the best things about working here – the work-life balance. You’re home every evening, every weekend. You’re actually living in the house you’re paying for.”
Jock’s team, part of Serco’s Operational Support Team (OST), is known for its agility and expertise. “We used to be called the ‘hit squad’,” he says. “We’d get a call from HQ to go to a squadron and do an urgent engine change. We’d get in, get the job done, and move on. Because of our experience, we’re quick, efficient, and trusted.”

"I'm committed to helping create an environment where people feel supported, valued, and able to thrive, because that should always be a priority. It's non-negotiable."
Moving from operational roles into a corporate environment has brought new opportunities for growth and influence, while reinforcing Vanessa's commitment to creating opportunities for others.

When asked about how Vanessa managed the adjustment from her frontline role into a corporate setting, she told us:
"Adjusting to the corporate world takes more than just a skillset; it demands courage and the ability to embrace your unique talent and influence. The growth I've experienced is invaluable, but my purpose now is bigger than my title. We need to normalise Black role models in leadership, it's crucial for recognition and for building belief. I am committed to making sure that the doors I walk through stay open, ensuring the next generation has clear pathways to these same opportunities for growth and recognition."
