COVID-19 Response

Responding to the COVID-19 Crisis

Serco Health – your local hospital needs you

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a profound impact on the UK and its public services. As a major provider of these services Serco is also being affected by this disruption.

Serco Health delivers facilities management at hospitals across the UK, which is essential in keeping our hospitals safe, clean and functioning properly 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. At this very difficult time of unprecedented demand we are committed to supporting our colleagues in the NHS, who are continuing to work in extremely challenging circumstances.

As our CEO Rupert Soames recently stated “We do important work. That pride which we all have in delivering public services also brings with it a responsibility as a company and as individuals to the people and governments we serve. We cannot be proud to deliver public services and not stand up to be counted in a crisis”.

Our roles

The services we provide to our NHS partners are varied, but the critical demand for increased staffing levels currently sits in our Hospital Support Operational roles. These include:

Hospital cleaning is a vital part of overall health and safety, as it’s a major contributor to controlling the spread of infections. In this role you’ll provide a high-quality cleaning service to patients, staff and visitors in a variety of wards, departments and non-clinical areas of the hospital. This will include the cleaning of floors, work surfaces, furnishings and equipment; the disposal of domestic waste; and ensuring that all cleaning equipment and materials are in a hygienic and safe condition.

Catering Assistant
You will be working from either the kitchen, the onsite cafes or our various stores to help prepare and deliver a range of food and beverages to patients and visitors. This work will involve the preparation and production of food, the loading and unloading of trolleys, and picking and packing food items. All work will need to be carried out in line with Food Hygiene legislation and to ensure that the nutritional needs of Patients, Staff, and users of our hospital services are met.

Ward Host/ Patient Caterer
Ward Hosts deliver a food and drinks service, taking meal orders whilst providing excellent customer care to patients. You will be interacting with patients on a day to day basis, so we need positive, personable people to come in and help make their days a little bit brighter. Duties will include; taking food orders using the tablet electronic ordering system, preparing & serving hot and cold drinks, loading and unloading ovens, monitoring and recording food temperatures, clearing away and washing crockery and cutlery, and ensuring patient areas are clean and tidy.

As a Porter you will provide an efficient portering service within the hospital, focusing on patient care as you escort them to and from departments and wards. You will also be responsible for the safe disposal of waste, the delivery and movement of items (such as records, mail and furniture) and other duties, making sure that health and safety requirements are met along the way.

All roles are essential to ensuring that front line doctors and nurses only need to focus on healthcare.

Testing Centres

As well as our work on Hospital sites we’re also working on the new COVID-19 testing centres opening up across the UK. Working in partnership with Deloitte, Boots and the Department of Health, Serco is providing support on site management, infrastructure, traffic management, security and administration.

  • Interviews and Social Distancing

In order to increase the speed we can process applications and to be sensitive to social distancing and isolation guidance, we are currently reviewing our recruitment processes and technology.

  • Telephone and Video Screening

We will look to use telephone interviews where possible, with Skype or other video calling apps being used in place of face-to-face interviews. We are also reviewing pre-recorded video interview apps and expect to introduce this within the next 2-3 weeks to give candidates full flexibility on when they are interviewed.
